Icons in notification area missing

In XP Pro is there a way to remove items from the notification area (r/h end
of taskbar) showing in customise. Programs no longer installed and not
showing in the notification area. Many of these items never show even
altered to always show.Icons next to many are incorrect too.
I'm hoping that after removal if possible that these will reload correctly
after their programs are reinstalled.
The hide -show icon rarely shows and when it does only one icon is hidden
even when all are selected to always show.

Wesley,

Thanks for the advice.

I did a manual registry edit. That cleaned out the past items ok.
Some are still not appearing after activating them from startup under
programs but I may need to reinstall these programs to fix that.

Is there a way I can fix the absence of the show-hide icon that's gone
missing. It was missing before the registry edit.

Appreciate any help you can give.

For some users, setting the very first icon to Always Hide, restores the
arrow/chevron. Note: It does take time for it to become effective.

Icons are missing or disappear, reappear: This happens for most Auto-Logon
users.

Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account
or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

Or if you are running XP SP1 uninstall UPnP from Add/Remove Windows
Components.
