Icons in Column Header of Listview

Using http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q316202

I was able to successfully add images to the column header of a listview
depending upon the sorting order, however this is shifting the column header
text way over to the right. Is it possible to add the icons and have the
text follow immediately - without the large space? I would prefer to not
have to resize the column when an icon is visible.

This is probably a long-shot, since your post is over 4 years old, but did you (or anyone else) ever find a solution to this?

You're the only one I've seen posting about this problem, and now I've run into it as well.
