I want my internet connection to disconnect for incoming calls

I want my internet connection (dial-up) to disconnect for
an incoming call, but it won't. I recently bought a new
computer with Windows XP Home. I have not disabled call
waiting, but incoming calls still do not sever the
internet connection. When I am online and an incoming
call comes in, I have no indication that there is an
incoming call. The caller does not receive a busy signal,
the phone just rings and rings until they get disgusted
and hang up. I have looked at line switching devices
(such as ComSwitch) and internet caller id programs, but
really just want Windows XP to do what earlier Windows
programs did - hang up when a new call comes in. Any
suggestions?

Hi Lisa,

I think you want to opposite of what everyone else wants.
When I used to have win 3.1/95/etc, I hated it when the
phone disconnected the internet. I've had highspeed
for...6 years now because of that. I looked at the XP
settings, and can't find anything. I think XP maybe have
been built around that issue so it doesn't happen.

I have used those caller ID programs before and they work
well. They run in the toolbar and blink when there's a
call. then you click once and it disconnects the
internet, and the phone starts ringing. Most of them are
free too.

Try your modem settings is the other option. You might be
able to see it there. What modem do you have?

I know its a strange request, the techies I have asked
about it look at me like I have two heads because (a) I
still have a dial-up connection and (b) I want it to
disconnect.

I'm not sure what specific brand of modem I have. It came
with the HP Pavilion. I do know that it is a V.92
data/fax modem. Thanks for your feedback.

I don't have a modem anymore, but I think to find out
what kind it is, go to control panel>system>device
manager. I think it should be listed there.
