I was able to view .avi files before doing a Recovery of my WindowsXP Media
Edition P.C.
Now, I keep getting a message that I need a Codec.. but I've downloaded
everything I can find.. I just don't know what I'm looking for.. or how to
put them wherever they should be.. can anyone help me ?

I had some time ago the same problem; however I found out that the DivX
Player - http://www.divx.com, free version is ok - can play these files,
and so I suppose that they are coded with the DivX codec.

At present time I can play such .avi files with the Windows Media
Player, the assumed cause for this is that I have upgraded from Windows
Media Player 10 to 11. So I advise you to upgrade to Windows Media
Player 11.

Nopers.. now it tells me that the files have no video track, and that
others have no audio track.
I installed both, the W.M.P. 11, and the Divx Player... neither will play
the files now. They played before on this Computer, I wonder what went wrong?
This is aggravating, as I'm sure you know..lol. I probably have downloaded
the right codecs, I just don't know where they went. I know I grabbed every
one I could find and told them to install.
Lord. I hope I don't need to do another Recovery on this puter.. it seems
as if I'll never get any sleep tonight :-(.
Thanks for your suggestions, David.. you probably have the answer, I just
don't know what to do with it.

If you download GSpot it can tell
you which codec you need.

John,
Thanks for the try.. but that only said that it wouldn't open my files, it
gave no reason.
Looks like I gotta go back to my Mac if I want to see these videos again :-(.
I wonder why Windows keeps upgrading things until they no longer work...??
Thanks to all who've tried to help.

Boy, I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere.. lol. No matter what I try I
just can't make heads nor tails of Windows Media Player. Even trying that one
you suggested only produced a new file that wouldn't open with anything on my
Computer.
I give up.. whatever the problem is.. I still can't just delete all of my
Video files simply because W.M.P. decided to change something or the other. I
think that if I just wait it out... somebody, somewhere will find a solution.
To make things even worse, now my SONIC won't even allow me to put them on
DVD's. Folks said for me to try NERO, but that won't run on this system ( XP
Media ).
DATA Discs burn fine, but I want to be able to watch the darn things.
Thanks again for all of the efforts.

Just a thought...but you mentioned that you
did a system recovery. I'm guessing you
used some type of option provided by the
system mfg...possibly a recovery disk or
a recovery partition.

What a system recovery normally accomplishes
is to revert the system to "out of the box" condition...
this means all updates and drivers that were
released since the computer was manufactured
must be reinstalled.

Sooo...have you done all the necessary updates?

Actually, everything ran great until the Windows Media Player was
"Automatically" Updated.
I've just finished another "Destructive Recovery" right this minute. The
Video files ( .AVI ) just won't run.. keeps telling me that I need Codecs...
which is what brought me to this forum.
This H.P. is a 2007 model, so I'm just guessing that whatever drivers I
might need are installed.
I'm afraid to update much on this, it seems like that's when the trouble
really starts.
A funny thing, I bought this "Media Center Edition" in order to do what I'm
no longer able to do.
To tell you the truth.. I have no idea what a codec is, or where to put them
if I ever do locate them. What I do know is that in the last 4 Months I've
had to Recover this thing at least 25 times. Every time I start to relax and
think things are going smoothly... wham.. Windows Media Player goes wonky on
me.
That program sure controls an awful lot on these Computers.
Thanks once again for your thoughts.

Here's some info on codecs:

Codec for windows media player 10

Windows Media Video 9 Series Codecs

WinXP is a very stable operating system...
if you've had to run system recovery 25 times
in 4 months I would suspect that something
serious is wrong...possibly hardware related.

It may be worth your time to take the tower
to a service center and have it checked out.

I make presentations to groups and I am committed to several in the near
future. I use my laptop and many video clips in these presentations… and now
…

I HAVE LOST MY ABILITY TO PRESENT BECAUSE OF THE ABSURD PROBLEMS WITH MEDIA
11.

I have tried every solution offered via the discussion groups and find, as
thousands of others do – nothing works. I have been thinking of getting
another laptop with Vista, but after this low blow, I will be looking at the
MAC. I can’t imagine that it could be as bad as the Microsoft mess.

I am thoroughly fed up with Microsoft and their flaky unstable systems – and
I am much impressed AGAIN with their lack of response to a problem that wipes
people out.
