You can recover the key by using any of several utilities. A popular one is the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder, it will show you what
your CD key is: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

Alec: How can he recover the key if it's never been installed to begin
with?

You don't, you use it while running Windows.

If you're running Windows, then it's been installed. You run the program while in Windows and it will tell you your key. If you
have not installed Windows (what are you running?) then it can't help.

Alex, read my keystrokes, IT WAS NEVER INSTALLED ONTO THE COMPUTER BEFORE SO
THOSE PROGRAMS ARE USELESS TO THE OP. SHE LOST THE CD CASE BEFORE SHE
INSTALLED IT THE FIRST TIME. Now, do you understand DL's post?

??? Who are you talking to?

If it was never installed on the OP's computer, then why did she say she formatted her computer? Obviously she had something
installed then bought a legit copy of XP SP2 later. Plus, she's using a computer to post the message isn't she? If she is using
her computer, then she could extract the key from it. If she had XP Gold or SP1 installed before, she can use that key in her new
copy of SP2.

She never said anything about losing the jewel case; she said that she can't find it. Therefore she might want to return it to the
store and get another one that has a key.)
