There is no generic answer for re-installing an Operating System upon a
laptop. Every manufacturer provides a different methodology.
Please refer to the documentation that came with your laptop for
instructions on how to restore it to its as-shipped state.

Og/Steve;

Where did the Original Poster (OP) state this was a laptop?
Did I miss that?

Percy Wyatt, JR;

Did the 'previous owners' give you anything other than the computer?
Like CDs, books, DVDs, etc?

Without the software installation media or some instructions on how to
restore the computer to a 'as originally purchased new' state - your options
are severely limited:

Purchase an OS of your choice, change the BIOS so it boots to CD/DVD first,
wipe the system with the OS CD/DVD of your choice and install the new OS.
At that point you should also install your applications and such.

Go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ . There you will find
zip files that will let you create boot floppy disks or bootable CDs
that will enable you to reset any system password on an NT class
operating system.

To reinstall W2K, boot from your W2K CD, reformat the drive and install W2K.
Although the following link is for XP the method is essentially the same.

If the previous "owner" of the computer doesn't know the administrative
password, I'd have to seriously question whether or not he was the
legitimate owner. Was any proof of ownership provided? Were you also
provided all of licensing documentation and installation media for any
software that came with the computer?

Be that as it may, with second-hand computers, especially if
acquired from strangers but perhaps even if acquired from a family
member or friend, your wisest course of action would definitely be to
format the hard drives and start fresh. You don't want to get in
trouble because the original owner may have filled the hard drive with
kiddie porn, or have problems because the original owner
downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
