I have to kill the process in task manager to exit Outlook. Why?

When I exit Outlook, whether via the x or exit in the file dropdown, the
window goes away but the icon stays in the system tray. The icon is
nonresponsive and I cannot open Outlook again until I go to task manager and
kill the process. Does anyone know what is wrong, and how to fik it?

Best guess would be a 3rd party application/add-in that integrates with
Outlook that is mis-behaving. Some ideas on what causes it...

1) Phone still in cradle and ActiveSync still keeping data in sync
2) FAX software
3) Adobe Acrobat Professional/Standard (installs an Outlook add-in)
4) Security software (antivirus/antispam)

List is definitely not a conclusive one, but it should show you that
sometimes the most simple things can cause it like having Word 2003 on as
your e-mail editor for Outlook 2003. You close Outlook but Word is still
running and bang, Outlook stays resident.

Thanks for the info. Is there a way to troubleshoot using procmon, debugger
or other tool to help identify which process may be hanging up outlook? Thank
you very much

I have never tried it this way. Always go old school of trial and error
since it is pretty easy for me to determine what I have installed that
may/may not integrate with Outlook.

If it can be done using the tools you mention, it might be entertaining as
3rd parties can do an in or out-of-process calls to the Outlook object
model.
