I have been wondering for some time

.... the following:

When I right click on the shortcut of Windows Explorer, or in Windows
Explorer itself on a folder, a quick menu shows up with, amongst others, the
options: "Open" and "Explore".
What might be the difference between these two?

It would be easier to do both for the same folder and see for yourself
what the difference is. At least some of the results will be specific
to options you have selected for your system.

Bary that is a great idea. But ... the fact that some options selected
influence the result makes it quite difficult to tell what is actually
intended to be the difference. Perhaps you could enlighten us all. Please.

As he says, try it.

On my system, "open" (which for some things - Firefox's download page,
for example - is irritatingly the only one available) opens an explorer
window with the left pane showing optional actions, whereas "explore"
has the tree structure in the left pane. I can get from the first to the
second by clicking the "Folders" button from the toolbar (which
originally I'd hidden, not realising it would solve this problem).

"Explore" opens the folder with the folder pane on the left; with "open"
there is no folder pane.
