I have a problem with repetition of a heading in a table of contents. It is a
top level heading (H1), the second heading in the document and neither the
first H1 heading nor those after the second have the problem. I am using
Office 2007 and the document is 1997 – 2003 format.

Is there a solution to this, please?

The usual reason is that there is either a manual page break before the
heading or an empty paragraph formatted with the Heading 1 style.

Hi Suzanne,

Thank you for the help. There was in fact a page break before the heading
and when I removed it the problem disappeared. I then inserted a new page
break and it was still fine. I then undid the changes and turned on "show
paragraph marks". The problem proved to be a space before the page break
line.

Cheers,

Terry

Terry,

Sometimes the best way to avoid this problem is to use paragraph formatting
to put a page break before the heading - either by directly formatting the
individual instance or by modifying the heading style. Manually inserted
page breaks (Ctrl+Enter) before headings often cause such unintended
results.

Good point, Gordon. We have been modifying headings as part of building up
new report and proposal styles but missed this one. Thank you. Terry
