I get no audio when playing my dvd movies

When playing mp3 files i have audio but when playing dvd movies i get no
audio. I think the problem might be somewhere else other than the player
because wmp10 and cyberlink powerdvd both shows the video portion just fine
however there isn't any audio to go with the video. I'm stumped. I read
online somewhere that maybe i need a codec, but i don't know which one. Can
anyone please help me figure this out.

First try plugging headphones into the front headphone jack of the DVD
player.......do you get sound that way??
Did you connect the audio cable from the DVD to the soundcard??
