I get either VPN or web access

Using Windows XP sp2, whenever I check the "use default gateway on remote
network" box, I'm able to connect to the VPN and access the internal LAN at
work, but I cannot browse web sites. The DNS appears to resolve, but not
even pings are answered.

If I clear the box, I can still connect to the VPN but cannot access the LAN
at work (not even by IP address). I can access the web in all it's glory.

I've tried this with and without the firewall on the VPN connection (didn't
try turning off the firewall on my wireless connection, but if someone thinks
it may help...)

In the past, I've always just hit "create new network connection" followed
the wizard to create the VPN connection, unchecked the "use default gateway
on remote" box and everything has worked just great. But that was on win2k
and a couple of pre-sp2 xp machines. The 2 machines that are having this
problem are both sp2.

Thanks to you all for your time.

in this case you may need crete split-tunnel. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
Can't access the Internet while using VPN

Symptom: after establishing a VPN connection, you may not be able to access the Internet because the VPN takes over your existing connection and all traffic to use the VPN default gateway on the remote network. The remote network may not allow VPN clients to access the Internet via their gateway.

Resolutions:
1) If you don't need to access the entire VPN resources, disable the "use default gateway on remote network" option in the properties of the VPN connection.
2) Edit route table manually if you know how to or check routing page on this web site.
3) For the security reason, some firewall/routers like Cisco PIX do not allow access the Internet after establishing the VPN and you cannot modify the routing table. You may setup split-tunnel.

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

I recommend Brinkster for web hosting!
