I can't get rid of some text

I've been given a word doc to edit but i can't seem to get rid of some text
that appears at the bottom of the page. It's not a footer or footnote. When I
edit footer and uncheck "Show document text" it dissapears in 2007, but not
in 2003. I can't select it, it doesn't show up in Outlie view but it shos in
print preview

Possibly a text box anchored in the document body but in the footer area?

I can't select any outline to the text box, i don't think it's that. I think
it's some sort of reference, they're numbered and have a horizontal line
above them.

Sounds like a footnote, or perhaps an endnote at the end of a section? Shoot
the doc (or the affected portion of it) to my email, and I'll take a look.
