I cannot delete pictures!

Hope someone can help. I have a slew of pictures in My Pictures, have been
trying to delete. Have tried higlighting and hitting delete button, then
yes. Have also highlighted, then gone to left hand window and clicked
"delete". Instead, picture gets copied. Also, when I have used control and
highlighted several photos for deletion and then tried to delete, they were
ALL copied. I now have pictures that have FIFTEEN copies!

What am I doing wrong?
