I cannot boot after doing a system restore

I was helping a friend with his spyware infested computer and could not clean
off the Apropos spyware using any utility that I could find - more on this
problem later. In an effort to go back to before he even got the spyware, I
did a system restore. The computer will not boot now. WindowsXP Home will
start to load and then it just stops. The mouse still moves, but I have
tried leaving it overnight and it will not boot in normal or safe mode.
Unfortunately, the OS was pre-installed by the manufacturer and I only have
XP Pro disks. I can go to the recovery console where I have tried restoring
the backup registry files. Any other ideas?

System restore does not remove spyware. If you have been unsuccessful in
removing the spyware, despite all the anti-spyware programs you have
installed and all the online spyware removal web sites you have visited,
your remaining choices are to restore the system partition from backup or a
clean install. Many computers that ship without install CDs have instead a
recovery partition that will erase the hard disk and return to the factory
install. Contact the computer manufacturer.
