I can ping other systems but not browse them

Hi all. I have 5 win 2000 systems in a peer to peer using
TCP/IP without DHCP. I have set static IP numbers for all
systems. Now 2 of the systems had mapped drives to one of
the system and that connection works. I can also ping any
of the systems OK also. The problem is that I can't
browse see any system in Network Neighborhood. I have set
all the systems to the same workgroup. The error is: "The
list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
abailable". I checked MS Knowledge base and found one
article regarding this error and followed the instructions
but no Joy! I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers (W2K/XP's). Got File- and printersharing loaded? Is
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (Advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab WINS)?

Yep Marina, all computers are in the same workgroup, all
users have accounts and printershareing is loaded plus
Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled.

Can you post the ipconfig/all from a computer that works and from the ones
that don't?

Ok here it is:

Windows 2000 IP config
Host Name: Glen
Prim DNS suffix:
Note Type : Broadcase
IP Routing Enabled : No
WINS Proxy Enabled : No

Ethernet adapter local area connection:
Connection DNS Suffix :
Description: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet adapter
Physical Address: 00-D0-09-DB-E8-C2
DHCP Enabled: No
IP Address: 192.169.1.11
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1

Thats it... I have set static IP numbers for all six
machines. The Linksys router ip is 192.168.1.1 we have a
switch plugged into the router as well. I also have setup
NetBEUI just to see if that would make a difference... it
didn't!

Hope this helps... The only thing left that I can think of
is to format all drives and re-load Win2000. I DO NOT
want to do that if I can help it.

Robert

you say in your example ipconfig that the pc has an ip
address of 192.169.x.x but the others are 192.168.x.x -
is this a typing error on your part is is that the
correct address? in which case it's on the wrong
subnet/has the wrong default gateway. Also, do you have
any firewalls installed that could be blocking
transmissions - disable them whilst you troubleshoot.

Yes, sorry it was a typo. The address is 192.168.1.1

Any ideas on why it is giving my fits? No firewalls in place at this point

2 things fix every browsing problem that exists...well...which can't
be solved by normal troubleshootings steps:

1.) remove pc from domain - place in workgroup - rename machine -
(return name or leave changed) add back to domain - (recreate machine
account)

2.) make sure that gpo on pc or domain is disabled re: microsoft
network server - encrypt/sign always and/or microsoft network client
encrypt/sign always - just turn all these off, and related off

-turn FIPS keys off. these are all found in: local computer
policy/computer config/windows settings/security settings/local
policies/security options

3.) Finally, the server itself can become corrupted regarding browsing
- the fix: dcpromo and remove the server from domain - then dcpromo
and add it back.

if that doesn't work - dcpromo - put into local workgroup - rename
machine - name back - re-add to domain using dcpromo -

These steps fixed all browsing problems that were more troublesome
than the average problems.
good luck!
