I am trying to find out how to open .dat files

I am trying to find out what I need to download to open a .dat file. I get
them all of the time and was told that they need to be opened under Microsoft
Outlook which I have tried and not been successful. What else can I do?

I use WordPerfect however it is not a free program.

Lots of applications will produce DAT format files, but given your message -
http://www.gpc.edu/~jbenson/resource/winmail.htm should cover it.

If not, you need to ascertain what application created them - and the
easiest way to do that, is to ask the person who sent them.
