Hyperthreading or not?

My Dell 8300 has an Intel Pentium 4, 3.00GHZ with
Hyperthreading technology CPU. It came disabled from
Dell. I have heard (grapevine) rumors that enabling
hyperthreading make the CPU run hotter than when it is
disabled. Has anyone heard or know the facts on whether a
hyperthreading CPU runs hotter than a disabled
hyperthreading CPU? thank you.

My 3.02 GHz P4 has HT turned on and runs about 45C to 65C depending on the
programs I run. I've never had a heat-related problem. If your case has
adequate ventilation, you should be OK. With the rapid pace of development
these days, before the chip burns out, you will probably have moved on to
newer technology!

Just a guess, but yes, with hyperthreading enabled the chip might run a few
degrees hotter but what is the problem with that? If the system is designed
properly and has adequate airflow and a decent CPU cooler there is no
downside. Enable HT and watch the temperature and if it stays sane then you
don't have a problem. If it starts to overheat then complain to Dell about
their cheesy design and mindless cost cutting at the expense of performance
and reliability. I certainly wouldn't choose to handicap one of my systems
by disabling any performance feature.

I have a Dell XPS 3.4 HT, and the temp runs just about the same in HT mode as in single mode, but my setup has a different cooling system. But the way these newer chips are designed, I doubt that may make that much of a difference. Your 8300 is fine with HT running. Dell has a fairly good reputation for building equipment with the correct hardware and devices, as well a backing them up.
