Hyperlinks in TOCs

I recently got some very helpful replies regarding how to remove the
hyperlink style from TOCs.
Unhappily, I read them while on the road in a hotel and now can't seem to
get them from the newsgroup at home.
I recall Suzanne suggesting unchecking "Use Hyperlinks" when creating the
TOC. I will do that from now on.
There was, however, another post regarding the use of the F9 key and
"unlinking."
May I impose on some Good Samaritan to repeat that advice?

Hi, JD. Suzanne Barnhill's replies to your post on August 4 were:

In Word 2000 and above, all TOC entries are hyperlinked and, as you say,
they display the Hyperlink character style (even though it's not applied)
rather than the appropriate TOC level style. If you don't need the TOC
entries to be hyperlinked, you can unlink them (the page numbers will still
be hyperlinked as they were in earlier versions):

1. In Word 2002 and 2003, you can do this when you create the TOC, by
clearing the "Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers" box in the dialog
(which appears to apply only to Web formatting but doesn't).

2. In any version, you can remove the hyperlinks by editing the TOC field
directly. Press Alt+F9 to reveal the field code. Delete the \h switch,
Alt+F9 again to toggle the display back, then F9 to update the TOC.

You can unlink a field using Ctrl+Shift+F9, but if you unlink your TOC, you
won't be able to update it (which is what F9 is for).

A lot of documents nowadays are used only on the computer apparently. Mine
are all designed for hard copy, so I certainly lose nothing by removing the
hyperlinks.

Press Alt-F9 to display the field code, something like this: { TOC \o "1-3"
\h \z }. Delete the \h, then press F9 to update the field, and Alt-F9 to
display the field result.

Thanks so much for redisplaying Suzanne's reply.
What I've realized is that I like the new ("Word 2000 and above") system,
since THAT is what makes the whole line, rather than just the page number, a
"live" link.

Unfortunately, if you retain the hyperlinks, you also have to deal with the
Hyperlink style. One change in Word 2002 and above is the "Ctrl+click to
follow link" feature, so that you don't go haring off somewhere else in the
document if you try to format a TOC entry.

Thanks again Suzanne. I think what threw me in the first place was that the
first entry in the TOC was labeled TOC in the Styles Box but the others were
called hyperlink. I deleted the hyperlink style and all was well. Each line
of the TOC continued to be a live link (not just the page numbers).
However, I then noticed that when the TOC was updated, the hyperlink style
was again inserted into the document. Since I like the entire line to be a
link, I'll just leave well enough alone and use the default TOC setup.
