When you set up a hyperlink on a slide to an existing file when the user
clicks on it can it open in the powerpoint slide show instead of in a
separate window

To give you a good answer, we might need to know a little more about
what you want to do, but here are two options I can think of:

1. Create a new slide. Go to the Insert Ribbon and choose Object. In the
dialog box, choose Create from file and then browse to the file you
want. You can then hyperlink to that slide.

2. Instead of inserting an object, do a screen capture to take a picture
of the file and insert that.

In Slide Show View, these are both about the same. In Normal/Edit View,
you do have the opportunity to edit the object as if it were a
Word/Excel/or whatever document, embedded in your PowerPoint
presentation.
