HW: Clean Reload on Laptop

Guest

I have an old laptop that I want to reformat, partition and load a clean
version of Win2000 on.

Can someone give me the simple steps? Can I format and partition directly
from the old Win2000 or do I have to make a DOS disk and go from there?

Thanks,

Ian

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Thanks,

What's the least amount of hard drive space required for a clean install of
Win2000? Any idea of how this compares to Win98?

Around 650 mB but realistically I wouldn't install the OS to less than
around 5 gB

Therein lies my problem. I am setting up an old Toshiba laptop for my
daughter. It has only 2gB HD, but the wireless card I have requires Win
2000 (or at least 98 SE, which I don't have). Will using Win98 SE decrease
disk space requirement that much?

I am loathe to start pouring money into the laptop to upgrade the HD. It
isn't worth it.

You can install Windows 2000 to a 2 gB partition. As long as you don't
intend on installing much else you'll have no problems. Ask them in a win9x
group for the details but yes win9x would require far less space. Agreed, I
probably wouldn't dump any cash into an obsolete laptop either.
