huge problems!!!

Hi,
i really need help with this. the version of MSAS beta 1
that i originally had worked fine but expired, so i
downloaded the newer version.

It has huge problems, whenever it runs a scan it freezes
my computer after its finished, and i have to turn it off
and start it again. Once I turn it on again, MSAS doesnt
recognise that a scan took place (ie, doesnt say "last
scan was blah blah" etc). What is wrong??? I have tried
deleting its file from the computer and re-downloading
and installing it, but it still has problems.

If anyone can help or have any recommendations, i'm open
to anything!
Thanks,
Jill

Hi Jill,

Is there any malware being detected in the scans? If
there is try rebooting into safe mode and running a scan
from there to see if it can clear the problem (Reboot and
keep tapping F8 then choose safe mode from the list)If it
still does the same let us know what the malware that is
being detected is called.

If your system is clean this may be a damaged install so
you are best uninstalling MSAS using the add/remove
screen from the control panel then delete the Microsoft
AntiSpyware folder from the program files area of
C:drive, Use your search feature for "all files and
folders" and delete these 2 files which will be in the
Windows\system32 folder

GCCollection.dll
gcUnCompress.dll

Then download Ccleaner and run the cleaner part and also
the Issues feature to remove all of MSAS's registry
entries that are left.

This may be abit overkill but we can then be sure you get
a clean install when you download it again.

Then download MS Antispy again from this link:

Let us know if you have any problems

I have this problem too. Originally I discoved it when I
found an obvious virus/adware EXE file in one of the temp
folders. Simply clicking on it once to highlight it caused
Explorer to freeze requiring a reboot. I deleted it in
safe mode however it has obviously come back under a
different name and location that I haven't found yet, as
whenever I do a scan or even just a file search, as soon
as something touches that file - lockup.

It seems that it has installed some kind of hook into the
system which detects any attempt to touch that particular
file. I think the hook simply never returns control to its
caller which then causes the system to hang.

How is this done?
Which registry key? How does one set up a hook that gets
triggered merely by highlighting a file?
Why do all adware writers know these things as if my
magic, yet no-one on these forums ever seems to know -
even the anti-spyware writers (demonstrated by their
failure to deal with these issues). Why don't these pricks
put their superior programming skills to a more productive
use?

Who knows?

If you are experiencing a hangup on scanning the
registry, then it's possible that some registry keys have
had their security removed. Run Ad-Aware or another anti-
spyware app to deal with these types of registry keys.
