http printing username problem

Hello,

we have set up a print server with restricted access by username and
password. Clients connect to the server via http (server is cups).
Everything works fine when we disable user access control on the server.

But when enabling it, we realize that the Win XP clients use the current
username to authenticate instead of the username we have specified in
the printing settings dialog. We noticed this through the servers log files.

The question is, whether there is a way to make windows transmit the
specified username together with the password.

Thank you, Benjamin.

The Internet Port configuration setting on the XP machine?
We configured the Internet Port as
"http://<ip-address>:<printer-port>/printers/<printername>". Under
securityoptions we select "Use the specified user account" and type in
the desired username and password. The checkbox "Use the same security
settings for all users" unchecks automatically even if we check it. The
problem is, that windows doesn't use the specified user information.

Any ideas?

Thank you, Benjamin.

Is the target server Windows?

I'm thinking the remote machine is UNIX of some sort. If it is, is SAMBA
running?

The remote server is a linux machine running a cups print server which
uses the IPP Protocol. To keep the system simple I don't want to use
samba if possible. It seems to me that XP is able to use the IPP
protocol for printing, including the possibility to use a specific
username and password. Isn't this possible without using samba?

Thanks, Benjamin.

I have no clue. I sent your configuration to someone but they have not yet
responded.
