HTTP Error 403 forbidden

I have a Pentium 4 machine running Windows XP Home with Internet Explorer 6
(with all updates). After I upgraded Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2, I
started getting this error message on some web sites I tried to visit
(especially eBay): "HTTP 403 forbidden -- You are not authorized to view this
page...[etc.]." There were also boxes with "X"s in them. I suspect some new
security measure on my computer is preventing it from receiving all data from
select web sites. I have reviewed prior posts on this subject and have tried
many of the suggested fixes, including renaming "hosts" to "hosts.old,"
enabling SSL2 and SSL3 in my IE Tools security settings, and running
"regsvr32 softpub.dll." But nothing has worked. I still get the same error
message when trying to view eBay and certain other web sites. I suspect I am
loaded up with perhaps too many, or redundant, security features. Can anyone
offer any further suggestions?

Hi Jim2148 :)

When litigation was over between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft, Microsoft
was forced to remove the java code from Internet Explorer. Many websites
require Java Software to be displayed correctly. Do the following and see if
it helps:

Go here and download the latest version of Javascript
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Download the Microsoft Java VM for Windows XP here
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Or get the Sun Java, which is the same as the Java

If you have any Norton product with an ad blocker, turn it off.

I am having a similar issue. I am confident it is not due to viruses. I
have a laptop with wireless connection. The status is connected and the
signal is good. IE worked on day one, but no days since...what could be
going on? I tinkered with shortcuts to my task bar, but I don't know
anything else that could have been done that contributes to a message fo
cannot find server and page cannot be displayed.

Thanks

Hi, I'm having the same problem. All of a sudden I cannot view any web
page in IE and I cannot connect to MSN Messenger via either Messenger
or Trillian. I can, however, surf the web using Firefox, and my other
programs don't seem to be having any problem getting online.

The only thing I've done since this started happening is I subscribed
to Comcast's Cable Internet service, which requires that you run an
installation CD. I think the problems started after that. From what I
can tell it did not install an actual program on my system. I called
Comcast and of course they're no help and insist that it's a problem
with my system. Whenever I restart my computer and try to open up a web
site, I see at the bottom that the browser is looking up
sas.r4.attbi.net. I don't know what this is, but maybe that's the
problem?

Another thing to consider is that I can surf the web fine in IE and
connect to MSN Messenger if I use a VPN connection. Crazy, I know, but
it works just fine. So there's something strange going on.

I've tried removing and reinstalling my network card, network
connection, run windows update, disabled anti-virus/firewall software,
etc., and nothing works. Please help!!!

Hi, this is Andrew again. Just posted a message about my 403 error
problems with IE. Well I put in the Comcast CD again, ran it, and it
started downloading Outlook Express 6. I told it to cancel, and it said
that it would have to revert to prior settings. I said OK, it closed,
and viola, my connection was back! So, for the above people, if you
have a problem with this 403 error, and you use Comcast, that may be
the problem. Try running the install CD again. Thanks!
