HTML & HTM file Icons Don't Display Properly

M

Mike N.

I'll try to explain this as best as I can... for some
reason, the appropriate icon (the blue e with the ring
around it) for files that open with Internet Explorer
(HTML, HTM, etc.) does not display for those files (in My
Documents, for instance). Instead, the displayed icon is
one that resembles a sheet of paper with a little windows
box inside it... when I go to Folder Options and try to
change the icon for those file types back, it doesn't
work. In fact, it doesn't give me the option to
hit "Apply" before I hit "Ok." I realize this is nit-
picky, but can anyone help???

Hi Mike,

Locate an .html file that is not showing the proper icon, right click and
select Open/Choose Program. Browse to the C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer folder and select the file iexplore.exe and click Open and then on
the Open With screen, click OK.

If Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is greyed out,
use Browse.

Use as an example: From the next screen browse to the C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer folder and selected the file 'iexplore.exe' and
clicked 'Open' and then on the Open With screen, click OK.

Two things I would try: first, go to Control Panel, click the Network
and Internet Connections category, then Internet Options. On the
Programs tab, clear the checkbox for "Internet Explorer should check" if
it is the default browser (you can also get to Internet Options by right
clicking the blue E on the Start Menu and selecting Internet
Properties). Start then close IE. Go back to Internet Options and
check the box. Start IE and make it default if it asks.

If this doesn't solve the problem, do a repair install of IE. This can
be very difficult if you have Windows XP, since IE 6 cannot be
uninstalled or repaired in the normal way. I hope there is a simpler
solution. Maybe someone will post a link to it.
