HP940c is not printing - stuck in pause mode

On a windows 98 computer, the hp940c printer had been printing with no
problem. Then we needed to print on both sides of the paper. the
printed page had to be reinserted into the tray, so it would print on
the second side. my husband was able to do this 3 times successfully.
Then on the fourth document he heard the paper crunch, the printer
jammed and then stopped.
There was a message but he does not remember what it was. the back of
the printer had fallen out and when he looked in the back, he saw the
piece of paper (intact but a bit crumbled). We put the back on the
printer securely.
I then held down the middle button and it printed a test page but when
I tried to print a file it would not print. I restarted the computer
but it still would not print.
the document is sent to the printer but does not print. I checked the
printer status and it is in "pause mode."
thank you in advance.

I can't remember whether it's the same in win98 but in WinXP - open control
panel, open printers, right click on the printer icon and you may have a line
that reads "Resume Printing", just click on that if it is there.

THE PROBLEM IS WITH YOUR DRIVER AND NOT THE PRINTER. YOU REALLY SHOULD
NOT BE USING W98 BUT THAT IS ANOTHER STORY. GO INTO THE DRIVER WHERE
YOU CAN SEE ALL PENDING DOCUMENT AND DELETE ALL PENDING DOCUMENTS AND
CANCEL THE CURRENT PRINT JOB. JUST TO BE SAFE REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER
(COLD START) AND CYCLE YOUR PRINTER. IF THERE IS NOTHING INSIDE YOUR
PRINTER IT SHOULD WORK.

IN THE EVENT THAT YOU STILL HAVE PROBLEMS DELETE YOUR PRINT DRIVER AND
REINSTALL IT REBOOTING IT INBETWEEN.

N

nannette

thank you
my control panel did not give a "Resume Printing" option . However, the
pause printing was checked, so I unchecked it and now the printer is
working fine.

N

nannette

thanks
I had already completed you rsuggestion of deleting pending documents
and then restarting the computer. However, I went into the control
panel and found the pause printing checked, once I unchecked it - all
worked.

What kind of stupid idiot suggests at a whim people delete their printer
drivers and operating systems when they don't know the easy answer to a
question! The poor lady clearly indicated her printer had been printing
just fine earlier. Thank you, Tony!

Much as I hate to admit it, measekite's post wasn't far off the mark.
Had the easy fix Tony proposed not worked, measekite's procedure would
have been the one to follow. For the record, he only suggested deleting
and reinstalling the printer driver as a last resort.

Also, he did not say to delete the OS. He merely stated an opinion that
Win98 might not be the best OS to be using. Win98 does still work for
most things, but it is no longer supported by Microsoft. It is generally
better for most users to use a version of the OS that is still being
supported with bugfixes and security updates.

Measekite, when you're not being an idiot you can hand out some good
advice. Enjoy my support while you have it. It won't last.

Truth is, I can't remember ever, and I mean ever having a corrupt
printer driver. And I've had enough printers (of all major brands ) to
fill and entire office cubicle.

Excellent, I did not have a Win98 PC handy so could not check whether the menu
options were the same as WinXP.
Happy printing.

YOU ARE THE STUPID JERK. IT TAKES LESS TIME TO REMOVE AND REINSTALL A

NOTHING TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. YOU AND YOUR KIND ON THIS NG ARE JUST
SO OLD AND FEEBLE THAT YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF TAKING THE GAS PIPE. AND

I've never seen one, either, and I have far less experience with Windows
than you have, I'm sure. (I use Linux for most of my computing.) That
doesn't mean it couldn't happen, though. With over 200,000 viruses and
worms waiting to attack a Windows computer, I'm sure more than one could
affect the printer drivers as one of the malicious things it might do.
Even with adequate protection from malware, re-installing the driver is
one, last, inexpensive thing to try before calling in expensive,
professional help.

I agree that measekite is the worst type of person to be on a help desk.
And I was right about my support of him not lasting. All it took was one
post from him and it was gone. Not that it will bother him - nothing
drives trolls like him crazier than when they think someone might
actually be on their side...
