HP5000 Duplexer issue

Hello All.

I have an HP5000 LaserJet with a duplexer.
It is jamming frequently. The first set of rollers on the back of the
duplexer appear not to turn when it jambs and the paper accordions up
there. If I manually turn the rollers or get it to work somehow it
usually works fine for the rest of the print job but the fist several
pages jam. It jams more with 11x17 paper than 8.5 x 11.

What tends to go wrong? Is there a motor with a bad armature spot? Is
there a belt or roller that slips that needs replacing? Anyone been
inside one of these?

Thanx

I haven't been inside of mine except to clean rollers and such. I do
have another duplexer for parts, but as you know, duplexers for the
5000 are not cheap, and I had to pay dearly for mine. Parts are not
available either, but I do have this parts unit if you knew exactly
what part was bad.

Just make sure all your rollers are clean, and the flap on the upper
back is getting enough pressure down on the feed rollers.

Thanx Raymond.
It may be a few days (weeks?) before I get time to tear it apart so I'll
get back to you if I need parts.
I am a bit discouraged to hear parts are not available. That explains
why when I googled looking for them, or a refurbish kit, I came up blank.

As you have probably discovered the duplexer is actually two parts. The
duplexer proper (the long piece) and the reversing unit (the part that the
paper feeds into).
The reversing unit has a lid that latches down. If this lid is not firmly
latched the paper will concertina as it enters the reverser. Sometimes one of
the latches fails, it is hard to see but there is a small piece of plastic
under the end covers of the reverser that breaks. Parts are unobtainable
unfortunately. Try duplexing and firmly push the top cover of the reverser down
and see if that fixes the problem, if it does then I suspect you are
experiencing this problem. I have had to manufacture a clip to overcome this on
a couple of occasions. Something reasonably heavy sitting on the cover may do
the job. Good luck.

So I had someone more familiar with printers look at it.
He told me that the roller on the duplexer was dried out and needed
replacing. This is the first black roller on the top of the slide out
part of the duplexer. When I got close enough to it I did indeed notice
it was cracked and dry. He cleaned it with a pencil eraser and the
duplexer seems to work fine now. He recommended that I look for a new
roller, but he didn't know where to get one. Hopefully this temporary
fix holds.

Does anyone have any positive experience with any rubber rejuivinators?
Any suggestions?

Thanx for everyones help.

Rejuvenators work well but won't fix cracks. Be careful though most of them
attack and melt plastic almost instantly so you need to get the roller away
from any plastic material.
