HP2000C and point and print and XP and windows 2000

I am resending this, it has not appeared on my news server.

I have a windows 2000 machine with a HP2000C printer attached and
shared on my network.

I can print to the HP2000C from a Windows 98 machine on the network
with no problems.

I have an XP machine on my network that I want to be able to print to
the HP2000C as well, but when I try to install it by browsing for it
it tries to get the driver off the server with point and print. And
that driver is not XP compatible so that fails with an error message
to that effect each time.

There is a list of drivers in the sharing tab on the Windows2000
machine but no XP driver is listed, since when Windows2000 was made XP
didn't exist. I cannot check a box and install a XP compatible driver
that will then be served up on demand.

XP comes with a compatible driver for the HP2000, and I have
downloaded another one. But I am not given a chance to choose the
correct driver.

I installed the printer on the XP machine as if it were on LPT1,
(there is another printer actually connected to LPT1). It says the
printer is ready which is not correct.

So I need to either install an XP compatible driver in the point and
print sharing tab on the 2000 machine so the XP machine will get it,
or install the printer manually which I have not been able to do on
the XP machine.

Can anyone tell me how to either get an XP compatible driver on the
2000 box or install the printer manually on the XP machine?

the HP HP 20000C driver has stability issues and has been blocked from
installing since it can cause system failures on XP. This information is
contained in \windows\inf\printupg.inf. Any driver from HP after the 6/2001
date will not be blocked. You can use any XP machine to remotely add the
driver to the Win2k system than change the queue to use the XP driver.

"HP 2000C Printer" = "HP 2000C", 1, 1, "6/1/2001"

;
; This section gives the model name mapping.
;
; 1) The syntax is
;
; "<Broken OEM model name>" = "<In-box model name>", WksLevel, SrvLevel,
"mm/dd/yyyy", Unidrv5.4
;
; WksLevel is the warning level on a workstation: 2 = warn, 1=block
; SrvLevel is the warning level on a server: 2 = warn, 1=block
; If the date field is used, only drivers with core driver DLLs older
than this date will be deleted.
; Make sure year is given in a 4 digit format (i.e. not 98 but 1998)
; Make sure date field is separated with a comma.
; If there are multiple entries for one single driver to indicate that an
older version
; is blocked and a newer only warned, make sure these entries are sorted
by ascending date
; Unidrv5.4 indicates whether there exists a Unidrv 5.4 driver for a
warned or blocked driver.
; If the Unidrv 5.4 field exists, a value of 1 indicates that a Unidrv
5.4 does exist
;
; 2) In case there is no In-box support for the broken OEM Printer, the
; printer driver will be deleted. The syntax is
;
; "<Broken OEM model name>" = "", WksLevel, SrvLevel
;
; 3) If the driver has to be deleted but only on the basis of the date
; (as explained above) the syntax is
;
; "<Broken OEM model name>" = "", WksLevel, SrvLevel, "mm/dd/yyyy"
;

Alan,
Thanks.

Can you elaborate more on the procedure for using the XP machine to
add the driver to the windows 2000 server?

Or a reference so I can look it up?

I understand the HP Deskjet 1220C driver works, and can be used. There
is an HP technote on it, it restores missing features in the XP
provided driver. I would like to install that one. But point and
print only allows the drivers on the server even though I have a
perfectly supported driver downloaded to the XP machine.

Here is a discussion. Of this exact problem!

I have downloaded that driver to the XP machine.
But when I browse the network for the printer attached to the other
computer it doesn't let me choose a different driver. It just errors
out.

I modified the printupg.inf file to have that line replacing the line
that listed no driver and had a 11/27/1999 date and no variables. .

I think I am missing something. I have to somehow install the XP
compatible driver on the 2000 machine so it will be served up to the
xp machine.

Alternately if I could choose a compatible driver on the XP machine
(XP comes with one) that would be a solution. I get no chance to do
that now.

the driver names have to match for Point and Print to work. Since there is
no inbox XP driver with the same name as the HP one then the driver will not
automagically get installed.

To install the driver to the remote machine, click Start, Run,
\\remoteservername

the explorer process will generate a new window with the shared printers and
folders as well as a Printers and Faxes folder.

Open this, then File / Server Properties, Drivers

Add the driver as this will be in the list of inbox drivers of the XP
machine.
