HP XP home computer, add win 98 drive as slave, XP will not boot, 98 does

J

Monday morn.

I need to add a 98 drive to an XP home computer. I cannot just copy files. It must be connected and accessible.

I connected the drive as a slave: set both drives' jumpers, connected the 09 drive to the 2nd cable connector.

The computer boots the 2nd drive.

The BIOS is set to boot from the XP drive, it is set as the master,...

But, the 98 drive boots.

Can I use the command console to de-activate the 98 as a booting drive?

Are you trying to dual-boot? Check your jumpering again. It sounds like
you've set cable select and if so, the master drive goes on the end of the
cable. This would explain why the Win98 drive is booting.

In addition, unless you had that Win98 drive installed on that particular
computer, make sure you have Win98 drivers for all your hardware.

Win98 will only understand being C:\ and you'll need to adjust XP's
boot.ini. Here's a link explaining that:

http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_98_after_windows_xp.htm

You may need to use a third-party boot manager.

Perhaps you could tell us more about what you are trying to do and then
could get more focused help. Is this because you must run a program that
only runs on Win98? If so, an easier way to do this is with Virtual PC
2004, which Microsoft has just made free. Create a virtual machine for
Win98 and run whatever programs you need. No need to reboot into another
operating system then.

Checked the jumpers a dozen times. Master / slave as is needed. Proper attachment to cable. And BIOS has a setting for hardrive boot
order.

Removed the jumper on the XP disk, disconnected the 98 disk and XP booted fine.

I do not want to boot 98. An old DOS based business program is on the 98 drive. It has copy protection and calling the company for a
new install always takes hours. We have adaquate licences (4). We just want to use a faster computer at one workstation. So I am
attempting to add the drive as a secondary to the new computer.

I have not had this problem before. Just last week I accessed a 98 disk from an xp pro comp when I needed to move files for an
upgrade.

This is a puzzlement.

Then you are a perfect candidate to use Virtual PC (or VMWare). It will take
you a little while to set up and install your virtual machine's operating
system (Win98) but not as long as you've been struggling with this and you
will love the ease of just starting your virtual machine and running Win98
and your business program while you are in Windows. If it works better, you
could even

There is a lot of information about Virtual PC and a newsgroup. One clever
person has even already created boot disks and virtual packages to make it
even easier.

To give you an example, I have virtual machines running DOS 6.22, Win3.1,
Win95, Win98, and OS/2 on my host XP Pro box.

Thank you for your reply.

The problem is the copy protection.

The program works fine under XP. We just wanted to move the drive and run the program.

Installing on XP will mean having to call for key codes. And they take a long time finding someone who can help and then the program
to generate the codes,....

Their windows implementation of their program is TAB hell. What is on one screen in the DOS version is on 5 tabs in the windows
version. The data conversion programs do not work well,.... And so on.

So, running the program from any disk other than the one it is on will require an installation.

Why do you think the 98 disk booting first?

I have never encountered this behavior.

I honestly don't know what the problem is. I know you've said you've checked
the jumpers umpty-ump times, but check by going to the drive mftr.'s
website for both drives. Some drives need different jumpering than just
Master if there is a slave installed.

But I'm just guessing. I hate to say this, but since you really need this to
work and this is a business, maybe you should call in a computer
professional to come on-site. So often problems will not be apparent to
people reading about it in a newsgroup and someone who is skilled will walk
in, take one look, and "aha!".

I'm terribly sorry that I don't have an answer for you. I really wish you
the best of luck,

Thank you for your help.

"Twas the IDE cable.

I had tested each drive separately. Both booted alone.

I changed the cable, connected both drives, and XP was there.

Very strange.

Another trick for the tool box.
