HP v40xi OfficeJet svchost failure with scanning wizard

I'm having a problem with the XP scanning wizard
failing. It will sometimes scan one page, occasionally
more, but frequently fails. The failure does not always
manifest the same --
- Sometimes it just gives an error message saying "the
current picture could not be copied" (but after that, the
wizard will not start again unless the computer is
rebooted).
- Frequently, I get a crash error message
reading "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has
encountered a problem and needs to close." After this,
it sometimes (but not always) tells me it has found a
solution and that I need to remove the blaster virus (but
I have run virus scans with multiple current utilities
that confirm I do not have the blaster virus).
- Occasionally, the wizard will lock up and on one
occasion it locked up the entire machine and XP.

I'm using an HP OfficeJet v40xi printer/fax/scanner (USB)
on a computer running Windows XP with SP1 and all
critical updates. I'm using the current HP driver
(v.3.0) with a patch downloaded from the HP site. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled the driver and device more
times than I can count. If I reboot the computer and
cycle the OfficeJet off and on, I can generally get one
or more pages scanned, but then hit this problem again.

The event log contains numerous entries that read:
"Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.0,
faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.1217, fault
address 0x0003353b."
Less frequently, the same event is logged with the fault
address given as 0x000081bd or 0x00033905.

This is generally accompanied by an event logged
as "Fault bucket 49159363." (Other bucket numbers that
have showed up include 02122897 and 49065467.)

Another event was logged as "Hanging application
wiaacmgr.exe, version 5.1.2600.0, hang module hungapp,
version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000." with a
corresponding "Fault bucket 02217304." event.

Anybody have suggestions about what is causing this or
how to resolve it?

(Reposting here since I didn't get a response on the
printing & fax group...)

I'm thinking you may have more than one
problem.

For openers...have a look at this article:

Message and a Flashlight Icon Appear
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=821690

All-in-one machines can be troublesome...
especially if the drivers are not current...
There is a WinXP driver at this link dated...
2002-04-20...version: A.14.04.06

It may be worth a try to download and install it.

Also you could run the "All In One Check"
utility from this same link...maybe it would
offer some ideas.

Might be a good idea to read the following info
about the W32.Blaster.Worm...there's a removal
tool available for download.

Here's another article that may be useful:

Good luck...
