HP ScanJet 6200C

I am scanning thousands of old and new family photographs that I have
accumulated through the years. I am using VueScan 8.0.17 with the HP
ScanJet 6200C. I use Paint Shop Pro 5.01 for my editing software.
My problem is that during a scanning session, VueScan loses contact
with the scanner and a message appears that "Program is not
Responding." This happens as many as 42 times while scanning a total
of 96 photos. Then, I back out of all programs, turn off power to the
ScanJet, and remove the USB cable to the ScanJet. Then, I perform a
restart on the computer, plug the USB cable back into the scanner and
turn its power on. This usually (but not always) works. I have a
Dell Dimension 8250 with Windows XP. I HAVE downloaded the Microsoft
Service Pack 2.
This problem occurred BEFORE I downloaded SP2 and it is, obviously,
occurring after the download of SP2.
I have had extensive contact with Hewlett Packard and with Dell.
Neither of them could offer and reason or rationale for this problem.
Any advice out there?

You got the USB to work? I have never been able to connect my 6200c via USB
and had to go with the SCSI interface. I have had none of the Vuescan
problems you described; perhaps the USB connectivity of the 6200c is the
problem rather than the scanning software. Have you considered going SCSI?

I could probably diagnose this if you sent me a problem report
with a vuescan.log file (you didn't send a vuescan.log file in
the e-mail you sent). This is described in detail at:

Since the problem is intermittent, you might try the SCSI interface
with an inexpensive Adaptec SCSI card. Alternatively, you might just
buy an inexpensive Epson scanner.

Thank you so much, Ed Hamrick, for responding to my e-mail. I opened
your suggestion this morning and then sat down to a scanning session.
I turned the Scan log on and was going to e-mail the result to you.
Well, wouldn't you know that I scanned 56 photos and NOTHING happened.
I will keep the Scan log on and send it when I get another crash.
