HP PSC 2175 scanner problem.

I have an HP PSC-2175 that has a weird problem. After turning on the
unit, it initializes OK, or seems to but the scanner keeps trying to
move to the left of the unit. The scanner lamp stays lit and it moves
left, then slightly back , then left, then slightly back, then left
and so on. I've tried to do a partial reset but that doesn't help at
all. All cables are plugged in properly. If I try to do a copy or a
scan with the unit, I eventually get an error message on the display
that the scanner has failed and to turn the unit off and then on
again. Any ideas?

I've experienced a similar problem recently with my PSC 2110. My printer
was sitting where the sun could shine in on it on an unusually warm day,
and it was quite warm to the touch. It exhibited the same behavior you
describe when I booted up. I think a belt or gear may have been
slipping. I disconnected it and pulled it away from the sunlight, and
allowed it to cool down to a bit above room temperature. All was well again.

The printer has been OK since. It may have just been too warm that day,
or it could be the first warning of printer failure. It's too soon to
tell yet, for me. In your case, I'd try letting the printer cool off
completely first and see if it makes a difference. If it does and then
messes up again when it warms up, I'd start looking for another printer
- or a good repair service.

The angle of the sun changes rapidly this time of year, and already it
doesn't hit the printer directly when sunlight comes through that
window. It think my printer will be ok, but thanks for your concern,
measekite.
