HP media center xp starts up but no icons until several restarts

i have an HP media center penium D . right outts the box it was a 50/50
chance when it starts up there will be no icons on desktop and it will have
to be re-started, i restored it same day, but still same problem. Sometimes
i'd have to restart 5-6 times, what would cause this? After about 4-5 months
i installed a computer cleaner software called Advanced windows care 2,by
LOBIT COM, it has a start up manager, i shut off a few files it says were not
necessary for start up, its been a few weeks now and so far seems like
problem is solved. But what caused this?
