HP LaserJet III memory/resolution question

Bryan Williams

Hello all,

I was wondering if adding more memory to my LaserJet III will allow me
to go from 300 dpi resolution to 600 dpi. HPs specifications for this
model say that adding memory will not increase the speed of printing
but they do not say if it will increase the resolution or not.

I had searched on Google and just could not find a definite answer.
Does anyone know if adding another 2 or 4 megs of memory will allow
higher resolution?

Many thanks,

Bryan Williams

The HP III doesn't have 600 DPI capabilities, it has a resolution
enhancement technology (RET) instead. This is accomplished without
actually having the capability to lay down 600 dots per inch, and
without having the memory requirements of true resolution.

You may find a better description of RET elsewhere.

Nevertheless, adding more memory won't result in a real 600 DPI
performance.

I have both 300DPI RET Laserjet III and true 600 DPI Laserjet 4+.

There is a world of difference.

Nope, it will stay at 300 dpi. The "Resolution Enhancement Technology" they use
gives the appearant look of 600dpi. The added memory (5 meg max total) with
allow more complex graphics to be printed. While it may not be the fasted laser
made it's one of the toughest!

Years ago, 'Lasermaster' took the canon sx engine and added a 1000 dpi
board. It came with a large b&w monitor, and an interface card for
the pc to connect to the printer....looks almost like a scsi
connection. It was around $15,000. Heh.
No point to this little anecdote. Don't bother searching for one.
