HP deskjet 940c has stopped printing.

Perhaps you can help me,

I have a HP deskjet 940c which has been working well.
But now when I use a refilled colour cartridge the red light
(on the left of three) flashes and it won't print.
If I use a proper cartridge it works ok. Can anyone tell me
how it senses the difference or how I can fix it to use a refill?

Many thanks in anticipation.

John.

Hi!

The printer is trying to tell you that something's wrong with the refilled
cartridge...either it can't be sensed, isn't making good contact or returns
bad values when queried for its ID.

Sometimes the cartridges do go bad and it really sounds like this one has.
You can try cleaning the contact strip (and--very carefully--the printhead
part) to see if it will improve things. Don't clean the little contact bumps
inside the printer unless you see something obviously covering them or
preventing good contact from being made. You can squash, dislocate or break
them and they are not fun--maybe not even feasible--to fix.

The Deskjet 940c does not know that a cartridge is refilled, but it can tell
if the cartridge has failed electrically. You might try cleaning the
cartridge contacts as shown at:

If this does not correct the problem you will need to replace the cartridge.

Sometimes just lifting the cartridge clamp and jiggling the cartridge
around while still in the holder will restore a bad connection to the
spring loaded contacts. If that doesn't work you may have a burned out
resistor in the cartridge.

Thank you, I have done all that you say dozens of times with no success.
This was a new cartridge which hadn't quite run out when I refilled it and
I used the same proceedure that I've used a hundred times since I have had
the same printer. It's strange but when I put the new cart in, the one
that's working ok now, it started the red light flashing but after pushing
the
three buttons for a while, it cleared and is now ok. That's when I thought
I would again try the refill without success. It's very annoying as I have
two packs of 3 new refill inks looking at me here on the desk. One I
bought by mistake.
There must some way to fix it I'm sure.
Thanks again.
John.

That is why you are having a problem. Go to Staples or somewhere and
buy genuine HP carts and everything will work. Look at how much
refilling is costing you in time and aggravation.

Buy new HP carts and return the generic junk to the relabeler.

These cartrdiges do not last forever even when the highest quality compatible
ink is used.
The very nature of the printhead in the cartridge will ensure that it
eventually fails. You have had a lot more use than HP ever intended I suspect,
there is no way to fix it.
You will need to buy a new cartridge.
