HP DeskJet 5150 streaking.................... please advise.

hello, I bought a HP DeskJet 5150 inkjet printer about two years ago.
I have no problems until recently. I changed the cartridges with fresh
Hewlett Packard brand inkjet cartridges (HP 56 & HP 57) and now there
are slight streaks when testing the black ink. Since the printer is
out of warranty, Hewlett-Packard wants to charge me for technical
support (which is totally outrageous IMO). all I want to know if
there's any simple way to correct this or should I look for a new
printer. I do a lot of CD disc labeling so I would want a printer that
can do an excellent job but easy on the pocketbook. I used to own a
Canon printer that found they are guzzlers in the ink department.

please advise,thank you!

Clean the ink station located under where the cartridges come to rest.
all the way to the right.

thanks for the tip but how and with what solvent?
TIA!

The other possibilities are -
1. The head on the cartridge can pick up fluff or dust, if you examine the head
you may see this. They can be cleaned with great care using a damp lint free
cloth avoiding the head plate itself.
2. The carriage into which the heads clip can also pick up dust or lint. This
is hard to see without removing the carriage but you can use a damp lint free
cloth folded and draw it from left to right and back under the carriage a few
times (remove the cartridges first!). You will need to have the carriage in the
middle of the printer to do this. This is a bit fiddly but it works well.
I would not use a solvent. Most ink is water soluble so water will do the job
with no risk of damage.

Are the streaks dark or light? If dark see
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...ocname=bpa00490&product=304431&dlc=en&lang=en.

If the streaks are light try printing a diagnostic self-test as shown at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bpd07098&dlc=en&lang=en#N1233
Use the diagnostic test for the 900 series, the one with eight presses of the X
button and four presses of the formfeed button. If there are regular parts
missing on the pattern it indicates an interconnect issue. In this case first
try removing and reinserting the print cartridge. If this does not help try
cleaning the cartridge contacts as shown at:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpa02060.
If the missing sections are random or irregular try running a cleaning cycle
from the driver toolbox.
