HP CD-RW not detected after XP load

I recently upgraded from 98 to XP and the system will no longer detect my HP CD-Writer Plus 8200 internal (non-USB) drive. I can't find a driver or install program that will work. Has anyone experienced this problem.

Try the HP web-site for your drivers and software, just go to your browser
and type in "HP.com", if it isn't there, you may need to look at a new
writer.

Brian,

I am afraid that the 8200 is so old you must buy the XP cd drivers from HP
for $10.00.

It shouldn't be a driver issue. One of my systems has an HP 8110 with no
need for special drivers. Have you looked into Easy CD Creator 6 or Nero 6?
I'm able to run my HP 8110 with either XP's native burning function or Easy
CD Creator 6.

Does it show up in device manager? How about in Disk Management
Any errors
Does your bios see the drive?

The bios does pick it up during startup, but once windows loads, the drive isn't present. Did you have to manually install your 8110. If so, how did you go about it.

The software that originally came with my 8110 was a lite version of Easy CD
Creator bundled in with some other utilities. The entire bundle is no
longer compatible. I had Easy CD Creator 5 with the appropriate updates
from www.roxio.com and now I have Easy CD Creator 6 Platinum. I just
install that application.

Are you saying your 8200 is banged out in device manager, Control
Panel\System\Hardware\Device Manager? Or, are you saying you are unable to
copy files to CD or read previously created CDs? If that is the case, you
likely are trying to drag and drop to CD and or read CDs previously created
that way. That function is not natively supported in XP. It requires
packet writing software such as the Drag to Disk component of Easy CD
Creator 6, Direct CD in Easy CD Creator 5, www.roxio.com or InCD from Nero,
www.nero.com. It also means, whether you knew it or not, you had a similar
type of application installed previously. Or you simply never tried a drag
and drop function or tried saving directly to CD until now.

Okay let me clarify, correct, the drive no longer shows up in device manager (just freekin disappeaed). Everything worked great before.

Have you tried running the add hardware wizard in Control Panel to see if it
finds it or finds a problem with the drive? If it's connected, it should be
seen.

Brian:
When you loaded XP, Easy CD Creator (or likeness) was on
the system?
The BIOS sees the drive fine?
It is not present in device manager?
If you load a new driver, you cannot?
If you load new software, no difference?
Yes to these means Filters.
First, uninstall any burning software on the system.
Reboot as required.

Go to start
run
type regedit, then OK, to open the registry editor

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Expand SYSTEM
Expand CurrentControlSet
Expand Control
Expand Class
Find and highlight: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Right click on it, go to export.
Save it on the desktop, with back as the file name (in
case this does not work)
Save it.
With the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}key still
blue on the left, look on the right for an entry for
Upper Filters
Delete the Upper Filters
Look for Lower Filters as well.
Delete that too.
Close the Registry Editor, and restart the machine.
See if Explorer finds your drives.

Cheers,
Angus

Sure have, it is connected, and the hardware wizzard will not detect it like it has in the past.

Good heads up, Angus, this certainly should be the next step for him.

Hi,
I just had a problem I could not solve on my own.
I asked for support from Microsoft and within less then 24 hours they e-mailed a procedure which
solved my problem (XP was not recognizing my cd writer).
To get the support go to START>CONTROL PANEL>HELP AND SUPPORT CENTRE>
GET SUPPORT>GET HELP FROM MICROSOFT
You will have to get .net passport to get this help. Prompts will direct you.
Best of luck, Adam

found this procedure in one of the answers to a question
What to do if CD Writer is not recognized by Windows XP?
