HP All-in-one printers disappearing when there are changes in the network status

Bobski here- I am having same problem with Vista and HP all in one 3310-
loaded four times, lasts a few days and dissapears. just with vista, not XP
Pro. what to do?

Alan: thanks for responding. I know at this time the HP 7410 is not missing
in the registry key you specified. It may go away when I lose the printer,
but I just reinstalled the drivers for umteenth time yesterday.

No I am going across the network to print. (I think that is what you mean),
I am not printing to the HP 7410 printer located ON another computer.

Not sure what you mean by inbox drivers.

What happens is I go to print, the printer is gone in my list of choices to
print to. I go through control panels to see if the printer is there. It's
not of course. When I go to reinstall the drivers, the HP software gives me
the option to either uninstall or add features. I have to uninstall before I
can then RE install the drivers.

I know it's not a network issue (then again I had a lot of trouble going
through Norton Anti Virus to get my XP machines and Vista Machine to talk and
share), because when I do reinstall the drivers the printer is immediately
detected

Thanks Alan!
Kathi

Is the printer located in the registry?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers

Are the printers local devices targeting the network card on the printer or
are these connections to a machine sharing the printers.

When you install the inbox driver for this device, does it also get removed?

When you say HP detects that they are there, do you mean the printers? Do
you know what application is detecting the printers? If HP has software
that detects printers who knows what they might do if the printer is no
longer detected.

I just want to add that this too frustrates me ... everytime Vista seems to
perform an automatic upgrade all my network printers dissapper and I have to
reinstall, but of course I don't notice until I really want to print.

If anyone has found a solution (which I presume is currently a Vista
problem) please let me know. I am tired of my printer being gone everytime I
need it.

I am becoming very frustrated by what seems to be the same issue everyone is
discussing re: printers dissappearing (usually when Vista does an automatic
upgrade it seems). Of course it always occurs when I most need the printer
and therefore I have to go throught the lengthy install for my wireless HP
printer. Has anyone found a solution (to what I presume is a vista issue)?

I am only average with moving around computers (significantly better than my
parents though) ... what is UAC enabled mean? How would I know if it is UAC
enabled? How/why would turning it off eliminate the printers dissappearing
each time my system seems to upgrade itself?

Thanks Mike ... that link appears to have some positive news ... I have
disabled the HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service and hope this helps my HP C7180.
Its been a couple of days and my printer hasn't disappeared yet.

This is a know problem. The blame is 50%. Part of it is the bugs in the new MS Vista stack. Part is on the HP service crashing when the driver fails and triggering HP CUE Device discovery to delete the printer. HP is working on a patch. If somebody volunteers a share I can send the updated DLLs.

Hi Rob,

I'd love to try this. How do I find the computer management services? Do I
need to completely uninstall and reinstall the HP software (about an hour)?
Or is it somewhere I can access now?

Thanks!

FYI: For anyone reading this string ... as it is growing long ... Mike
Wilson's link to directions to disable the HP CUE Device discovery has worked
for me (until HP finds a patch) ... since following the directions at Mike's
provided link I have not lost my printer again :) which is very much welcomed!

Are you a professionnal computer analyst or an amateur ? this is exactly the
same problem I have with my Printer C5180, and that a lot persons have with
different brand of printers. You steared me toward a spooler crash which is
not the problem. The most plausible cause is network problem described in
this thread. Some people suggested disabling HP CUE DeviceDiscovery will this
work or not. I want a strait answer, no bull !

According to this very long thread, disabling de HP CUE DeviceDiscovery seems
to be a temporary solution (REDCATTOO has kept is printers for almost a
month).
The guys from MSFT Alan Morris and Ken Zhao seem to be as useless as HP
Support ! They keep asking questions instead of providing solutions. At least
we have a forum so share our experiences. Thanks to everybody, will keep you
informed if it works for me.

Yes, the people that I suggested disable this HP software have had success.
The funny thing is you never stated this software was installed You just
said some other HP software was failing.

No, I am not a software analyst, whatever gave you that impression? I just
like to help people with print related issues

Sorry I don't know all the software that you installed on your machine with
the printer since I completely avoid vendor drivers since they can cause
problems.

What does [MSFT] stand for after your name, and Window Printing Team under,
if your not working for Microsoft ?
Sorry if your just a poor customer like me trying to fix Microsoft software !
You must admit that it can be very frustrating; imagine if it was your car
and your always at the garage!

Thank you Mr Wilson, your fix seems to work; still getting HP Network
DeviceSupport shutting down most every time it comes out of sleep mode, but
I'm keeping the printer. So the initial problem with Vista is not solved but
workable with your fix. If I may could I ask you if you know of any
consequence to shutting down this service? it must serve a purpose !

Thank you again yours truly Guy Delorme

Yes I work for Microsoft but I am not a support person, I just like to keep
in contact with the print customers.

So is that HP CUE software installed on your machine? Did you disable it?

If the software in not installed, did you uninstall the driver?

I have just installed a HP 6310 about a week ago and am encountering the
same problem. I reinstalled the software then disabled HP CUE Device
discovery (I also tried the fix provided by HP
"CIT223969-HPCOM-Baloo32-v4(2).exe" but when I ran it, it said I didn't have
any applicable HP devices - perhaps because I ran it after disabling the HP
CUE...)

I will see if this suggestion works. I am debating returning the 6310 and
maybe trying something with network capabilities from Canon. I am a little
surprised with both MS and HP that a problem such as this (this thread
started five months ago) doesn't seem to have an official fix!
