My wife's printer has developed a fault. But before I consign it to
landfill I thought I'd try this group!

Yesterday a piece of paper got stuck and I pulled it through from the top.
But now it won't print.

At power on the print carriage moves right then left and whacks itself hard
against the LHS end stop.

Both yellow and green LEDs are flashing.

That's all it will do.

I took the top off and reseated all the connectors but no change. Nothing
is visibly broken or burnt.

Does this fault ring a bell with anyone?

Can you point me at a service manual or even a circuit diagram for this
beast?

The most likely cause is a disturbed encoder strip. This is a long,
thin (about 1/4" wide) strip with encoding marks printed on it. This
strip runs through the back of the carriage and provides position
information to the printer. If the strip is dislodged from its end
supports, or no longer is threaded through the sensor on the carriage
board it can cause the problem you describe. See
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...cc=us&objectID=bpd50646&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
for an idea of what the strip looks like and its position. The strip is
held on the ends by spring steel tangs. If the strip has come loose
from its supports it can be carefully reattached. It needs to be
threaded through a small black sensor on the rear of the carriage board.

Nick- Most likely the problem is that the paper tray lift is stuck. If you
open the top, look to the far left side of the paper roller. There will be
a small arm there that acts as a cam for the paper feed mechanism- it is
about 2 inches long and runs parallel to the roller. This arm has the
ability to travel approx an inch or so and is most likely all the way to the
limit of it's range. What you do is pull it back toward you slightly and
snap it back to the left side again (only an inch or so of movement to the
stop) and release. Initially it might be under some tension, and you'll
probably hear a snap when you release it. It's been a long time since I had
a Deskjet 820, but I had that problem after the same thing as you. The
mechanism just binds sometimes when you remove jamed paper by pulling it
out.
