hp 8150 inkjet alignment - how does it work?

I put a new ink cartridge in my hp Photosmart 8150 and it did an
automatic alignment. It printed a page and said "Alignment Done".
I'm used to Epson and other hp printers that print a sheet and have
you enter info to adjust the alignment.

How does the 8150 do an alignment with no user input?

There is a small sensor and LED light source on the carriage. This is used
to read the proper calibration values for alignment and possibly cartridge
energy requirements.
