HP 7660 Photosmart - Can't Understand What Happened....

This is regarding tri-color cartridge #57 performance.

The best way for me to describe this is to do it stepwise;

I was using cartridge "A" until I was low on ink.

I refilled cartridge "B" in installed it. All nozzles worked and it
performed normal after a cleaning cycle. Later when I printed a 4x6
borderless picture, about one half was void of yellow, no streaks, then the
other half was perfect!

I ran a page of yellow, magenta, and cyan (using Word) and everything came
out OK. Did cartridge cleaning, contact cleaning and other things to no
avail.

I uninstalled and re-installed the printer software, still no change.

Then, I refilled cartridge "A" and put that in the printer, and everything
was back to normal. I put in Cartridge "B" and back to the original problem
in the only about one half the picture was perfect.....no streaks, just void
of yellow for about one half and the yellow came in perfectly the other
half.

All this points to cartridge "B" not working well only in photos.

Now, I can't figure why in cartridge "B" the yellow did not come in for a
while, then came in with good form.

Any ideas on this?

When I used to mess with lexmark cartridges, I used to get a problem
much like that (among many other troubles)

For that particular problem it turned out that I either filled the
cartridge with tooo much ink (probably yellow in your case) which
would not allow flow to the head, much like holding your finger over
the end of a straw.

Another possibility is not letting the cartridge rest long enough for
the ink to settle to the head.

Try removing just a bit of ink and see if that helps. If not, let it
rest a day or two.

Perhaps others will give more possibilities.

let us know what you discover.

Thanks, bezzer. I'll let it sit in a "Tupperware" container with a piece of
moist towel for a while and try it later. I'll try it in a week or so as
see how it works then.
Thanks.

just a day should tell if that was the trouble or not.. Also, did you
try removing a little bit of ink as well?

I'll let some out on a damp paper towel. The ink is held in the reservoir
with a sponge. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Ok suggest you get refill kit form a local stockist the Inktec brand
www.inktec.com
you get a tool to suck foamy ink from the head so you get instant printing

With the #57 frequent refills means less top up ability ie only small
amounts of Ink can be injected ~ 3ml
sponge gets old and foamy ink inside prevents this.

BAd flow as you have had is Foamy ink

Let its sit for a Day or get the Inktec Kit

Right but as I was explaining before, the ink from the top could be
the problem. Its like holding your finger over a straw where the
liquid will not flow.

The reason I mentioned this again is if thats the case , then resting
the cartridge will not help.

I would remove some ink from the injection point to be honest.

I understand, I'll get to it and see what happens.

Final conclusions:

As it turns out, the cartridge in question has trouble printing only in the
*best* mode. This photo printer also has a few more printing modes such as
*normal* *fast draft* as well as others.

All three colors print photos perfectly in *normal* mode, but only in the
*best* mode does the yellow have a problem. The yellow does not streak but
stops altogether half way through the printing a 4x6. (In the *best* mode,
the amount of ink deposited per scan is less I am guessing.)

I have tried all the tricks suggested and then some. For a while I thought
it was the printer, but my other two color cartridges work just fine so I am
ruling out the printer.

I'll use the cartridge until one of the inks runs out, then we'll see.
