Hi

Yesterday I bought a HP Deskjet 5550 in the sales for half price. It seems
fine and cetainly prints better than my old Lexmark Z43! The problem is,
whenever it's plugged in (turned on OR off) there is a small noise emitting
from the area where the cables go in. It almost sounds like a small rush of
high pitched air or a fan. Is this normal? It's only audible when I place my
ear right next to it, however at night it can just about be heard in my
bedroom.

Any ideas? Should I return it, is there a fix or is this normal for
printers? (my lexmark didn't do it).

The computer's running XP and it's connected via USB if that helps.

Thanks and Happy new year.

You would get a better response if you posted your question in the
comp.sys.hp.hardware newsgroup.

You are hearing the switching power supply. It is normal for this to make some
noise, but most people do not hear it :-).

Hey Zermut (or any of the other names you use for posting) - what is your
angle? You do not actually answer any questions, you just refer folks to
comp.sys.hp.hardware, which is generally *not* such as good group for
answering printer questions. If you really want to contribute how about
actually answering a few questions, or maybe refer folks to HP's forum at
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/familyhome.do?familyId=412
or for DeskJet specific questions
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/categoryhome.do?categoryId=415 .
