I thought of asking this question on the newsgroups, but then after
seeing the kinds of responses I'd get, I thought better of it and
decided to figure it out for myself.
Let's start first with an overview of the problem (I'll get to the
good stuff in a minute). Bill Gates is a MAD **** who wants to take
over the world. He wants to be GOD of all desktop computers. His
operating systems always reflect this (they become more and more "big
brother" with each version). I've never paid for a Microsoft operating
system IN MY LIFE, and I sure ain't about to start now. I wouldn't
give this bastard a penny of my money, if my life depended on it. If
it weren't for the fact that nearly every piece of software is made
for this OS, I'd have been more than happy to use a Mac or Linux right
a long time ago. I mention that because the first thing that Bill
Gates ditthoheads tell you when you complain about all the redundant
shit that comes with XP, is "Well no one forced you to buy XP!" <say
this in a whiny pimple-faced geek tone with a wavering pitch, for full
effect> A big virtual bitch slap for every geek that answers a serious
query this way.
I've hacked every part of this operating system so that it doesn't
even look like something that went through MS' offices. And when it
boots up, I have a Pirate Logo winking at me, rather than that ugly
neo-nazi symbol of computing, the Win logo. That's the only way to
stomach using a Microshit product. But enough about me....
If you're reading this, you're probably all too familiar with the
problem of trying to get Movie Maker off your XP. You've already
realized that Gates gives you NO option to not install this useless
piece of shit program when you were installing XP. And many equally
frivolous programs like it. That's part of his plan to monopolize the
software market with MS crap. Whether you like it or not. Most XP
customers don't use this Movie Maker shit, and only members of Gates'
zombie army like Media Player. But like it or not, it takes something
like 13MB of drive space (most of it part of a useless "tour" to help
you learn its features), and it plants itself all over your registry.
But even though its not integral to anything, MS has MADE it integral
to the operating system. They consider this useless piece of shit SO
VITAL, that if you delete one of the files in the Movie Maker folder,
it'll reappear. Because WHO THE HELL can live without editing their
own digital movies, right?
Thank you Gates, you tyrannical motherfucker.
Now after you're done cursing Gates' name because you can't delete any
part of this piece of crap, and you've already learned it doesn't
appear in the Add/Remove components list, next you put out a message
on a newsgroup or you do a search on the web to find out how to remove
it. You figure someone must know, right? WRONG! According to Usenet
and the WWW, I'm the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO FIGURED OUT HOW TO
UNINSTALL MOVIE MAKER. Wow do I feel special... On both Usenet and the
WWW, everyone will point you to a "Papa John", the expert of XP's
Movie Maker feature. But he can only help you if you installed Movie
Maker 2. So every time someone responds to your query with a link to
his site, that's what you will learn. And if PapaJohn himself (the
expert on all things Movie Maker-ish) answers your newsgroup query on
the subject, he'll pretend you didn't just ask him how to remove XP's
Movie Maker, but that what you really want to know, is how to remove
Movie Maker 2. Which can be done, according to Big Pappa. Maybe. Oh,
you weren't asking about MM2? You just want to know why you have no
option to uninstall the MM1 that comes with XP, or why it needed to be
installed in the first place? "Sorry, you can't uninstall MM1". If I
had a dime for every time someone said that in response to a query to
remove it......
The reason why you won't get a valid response to your query, is
because usenet is populated with ass-kissing cult members of the Bill
Gates Cult of Geeks. Who when you ask how to remove this useless piece
of shit program, will inevitably respond "Why would you want to do
that? It's not hurting anybody? Just ignore it.". Yup. "Just ignore
it". That's exactly what Gates himself would say to you. That is in
fact what his answer was when the Feds slapped him with an anti-trust
suit, which the would-be God of technology lost, and the judge decreed
he must allow for the option to remove Explorer from his Windows
operating system. That incorporating it was anti-competitive. So what
did this sneaky **** do? Well he implemented the uninstall option, but
when you used it, all it ****in' did was remove the damn shortcut!
Like you couldn't do that yourself!
Yup. "Just ignore it". Ignore the fact that you're wasting MEGABYTES
of space on your hard drive for shit you actually want. Ignore the
fact that programs like Explorer, Movie Maker and the rest litter your
registry like a cancer. Ignore the fact that their very presence could
create problems for other programs that come along. No, what you
should ignore is the idiotic Microsoft cult members who feel that
telling you to ignore the program you asked how to uninstall, is
somehow a valid response.
Well, this time it's different. This time, yer gonna get some REAL
HELP. If everyone one who always wanted to remove Movie Maker can
finally do it, think of how much combined space that will save across
the globe.... Enough to document Bill Gates' secret plans for world
domination....
First thing I did to attack the problem and extricate the foul piece
of shit was to remove traces of it in my registry. I first did a
search for "moviemk", to quickly eradicate sure references to this
garbage, then a search for "movie", to sift through some of the rest.
(This is a more broader search that will bring up a lot of other
references, such as 'activemovie'. You have to have a lot of patience
to manually delete such a program from the registry...). To improve
results, you can also search for "wmmfilt", "wmmres", "wmmutil", which
are other moviemaker files. Following this, we end up deleting quite a
good number of references to this UPOS (useless piece of shit). But I
don't know that its everything, and I'd be surprised if it was. Its
probably most of the pieces of turds that it leaves in your registry,
and a good start.
Next step after that's done, I rebooted to load everything fresh
(prob'ly not necessary but....). The final step requires "Process
Explorer" by Sysinternals (a process killer program). (Before using
this, I first closed everything I could, in case the system froze and
required reboot). You simply do a Find for "movie", and then kill the
handle (it will point to the movie maker directory). This then allows
you to delete the directory. I believe also killed the handle for the
dllcache directory. The files in movie maker are backed up in the
dllcache directory, and what I did was delete the files there first,
before deleting the ones in program file\movie maker (so in case the
zombified WPF system was going to try to replace the movie maker
files, it would have no backups to do it!).
This is basically like having to go to war with your own computer,
because that's waht it feels like! You have to go in there quickly and
agressively, make a precision attack, and get out before the bomb goes
off. Oh yes, XP will complain even after you manage to delete those
files. When it does, look for the button marked "Shut up and kiss my
ass Gates! Go look for your Movie Maker files in HELL!". If there
isn't one, choose the closest thing. Hitting Cancel will also do.
Reboot and now you've got most if not all of Movie Maker off your
system.
Now comes the hard part, Windows Media Player......
