How to underline and not cross out when I'm tracking?

When I try to underline while tracking, I get a cross-out line instead. How
do I underline without crossing out, and how can I cross out without
underlining?

The strikethrough is the result of the markup applied due to the Track
Changes feature - essentially you are replacing the non-underlined text with
underlined text, which constitutes a change.

There are settings changes which may be preferable but without knowing which
version of Word it's difficult to tell you how to proceed.
