How to tell if DC has been demoted?

I am trying to retire a server that was supposedly a DC w. exchange 5.5. A
contractor had came in to install Exchange 2000 on a new server and move all
the data over from exchange 5.5. I was told he disabled all the exchange
services and demoted it.

I checked and found all the roles were transferred over to the new DCs. I
attempted to power down the old DC. Once it was off, people were not able to
access MS Exchange 2000.

Is there something that is still running on the old DC? When a DC is
demoted, is there a way to tell it actually happened? That server is still
under the DCs in AD and still authenticating end users on the network. Can
this be caused by AD connectors?

Thanks in advance.

If it is still authenticating users I would say that it is probably a DC.

Try to query the rootdse of the server and see if it responds.

adfind -h servername -rootdse

If it responds, it is either a DC or someone loaded an LDAP V3 server on it.

Hi,

On this particular server look for a log called DCpromo.log within the
debug folder under Windows directory.
Here you will find information on the promotion AND demotion of the
server. It will also tell you when it was promoted and demoted.

I hope this helps.
