How to speed up navigating network ??

Sometimes navigating through network drives seems to be very slow. What can
be done to speed it up and why is it erratic?

Using XP Pro and Server 2003.

Sometimes navigating through network drives seems to be very slow. What can
be done to speed it up and why is it erratic?

One thing that I typically do when navigating a deep folder is use the
folders view and drill down there using only the + symbol to open the
"next level" of folders, *then* I click on the actual folder to see
the files. Getting a list of folders is faster than displaying
*everything* in the folder.


Why is it erratic? Different loads on the server/network/local machine
is my best guess. that or the phase of the moon.
