how to Share entire drive

For some reason, I can share an entire portable drive connected to a Vista
pc, but I haven't been able to share the entire main (internal) drive. I
shared the root (c:\), giving permission to all administrators, but most of
the subfolders still give access denied. How do I share an entire drive in
vista?

I need the same information.

I had this working but a vista update screwed up the sharing (for the second
time) and I have to re-set it all.

Some weeks ago someone at MS Support in the UK told me how to share the
complete C: drive, but I can't remember how he explained it.

It had something to do with mapping the drive and entering an obscure
location in the Folder box (something to do with #), so maybe this will give
someone a clue to point us in the right direction.

I think it may be an implication of UAC, but I don't know how Vista handles
that. If even a local administrator on a Vista machine would require UAC
elevation to access a folder, what happens if a remote administrator tries
to access that folder? (especially if the remote administrator is not
running on Vista, but xp).

I may have to test with UAC off. Do you have UAC on?

Are you attempting to share to all users? The way we are sharing is select C
drive, right click>Share>Advanced Sharing>select share this folder>enter
permissions that you require.

Adding the users as the users group got around the permissions denied issue

Those permissions apply to the share itself and not the underlying folder.
In other words if the account you are using to connect to the share with
doesn't have NTFS permissions to the folder, all you will be able to do is
connect to the share.

The underlying folder had proper NTFS permissions, but as administrator.
The solution I thought was to give permission as part of the users group.
However, I'm still having problems with editing files (at least in the root
folder) that have been given full permissions (users group). It still
requires accepting a UAC elevation prompt on the local machine to edit &
resave them.
Is there a way short of turning off UAC to give permissions to a user
that allow him, when remotely accessing the drive (i.e. no UAC elevation),
to edit files in the root folder?

I have managed to do it at last.

What I did was to share the C: drive on the Vista PC and changed the
permissions for Everyone to Full control.

On the other PC (XP in my case) I set up a Network Map to the C: drive on
the Vista PC as - \\Vista_PC\C$ -and used the 'Sign in as different user' to
use the Admin username and password for the Vista PC - and I now have full
access to the Vista C: drive.
