This is in response to an earlier thread asking if it is possible to
share a scanner over a network.

The answer is "Yes" if you are using Windows.

There is low-cost, comercial software that solves this problem. You
can find several soruces if you do a google search for

share scanner
or
remote scan

One of the sites where you can purchase the software from is located
at
http://www.remote-scan.com

They have a free trial copy of the software so you can test it out and
see it work before you buy.

Why would one want to. Lets see:

1. Get up from my desk
2. Walk to other computer with scanner
3. Place original on platen
4. Go back to my desk
5. Scan
6. Get up from my desk
7. Walk back to other computer
8. Retrieve original
9. Open scanned document/photo
10. Send to my computer

OR

9. Go back to my desk
10. Open scanned document

Now, why would anyone want to do that? Just get a scanner for under $100 and
be done with it!

Assuming you are alone of course...

However, very common situations are:

1) A scanner is connected to a computer where someone is working who
does not want to stop doing what they are doing so someone else can
use the scanner.

2) A scanner is connected to a computer on a home wireless network,
and someone on a laptop wants to use the scanner but does not want to
have disconconnect and then reconnect cables, etc.

3) A higher-end scanner is in a dust-free environment where a
technician or other work places the document and then someone in the
same building but at a more distant computer opperates the scanner.

The list goes on and on... but you get the idea...

I am always amazed how selfish a view people have of their hardware
world; as if the world only works the way they do...

Go to http://www.remote-scan.com if you need to share a scanner.

for a switch....just more open windows to do more then 1 thing :-D.

first and its $100. Any less expensive ones available now?
