How to selectively activate disabled Word 2007 add-ins

I have a lengthy thread in ApplicationErrors about Word 2007 crashing almost
50% of the time. After much trial and error and help from members of that
board, talks with Ms techs, and calls with the
mother company of the problem software in question (Nuance) plus info from
their web and Ms Knowledge Support Base, I now know the problem is generated
by ScanSoft's PDF Create! 4.0. The related programs Paperport (11) and
OmniPage (15) appear not to cause the same problem.

So after trying things like renaming the ScanSoftPDF.dot file, making
changes to the registry, removing ScanSoftPDF from the list of Add-Ins,
experimenting with printer drivers and so on, the only solution that has
worked so far has been to use the Trusted Center to disable this add-in. The
setting I selected allows programs with trusted companies ("publishers") to
remain activated.

My problem is that no there are other programs and features that are
inactive now which I would like to activate but I don't know how to do this.
If PDF Create! comes out with a fix, all I have to do is select the Security
Warning ribbon at the top of the page under the toolbar and there grant
permission for it to work as it should. Of course if that truly fixed my
problem, I could release all of the applications at one time in the Trusted
Center.

The Trusted Center has only three options (trusted programs, disable all,
and disable notification for unsigned) that are obvious to me. Is there part
of the program I am missing that will activate the other programs/features
that are not causing problems and that I would like to have available in
Word? Almost half of those in the inactive list are in a Microsoft folder
and even though I have listed Microsoft as a "trusted publisher" that has
not been adequate to release these other programs/features.

Hi Ako,

In the Word Options form, look for "Add-ins" in the list at the left. This will
let you see what Add-ins are present, which are loaded, which are disabled. At
the bottom there's a drop-down where you can select which kinds of Add-ins you
want to manage. If ScanSoft.PDF is *only* the .dot file (and not an additional
COM Add-in to go with it), choose the "Templates" entry, then click "Go". You
should see the template listed; checking/unchecking the box will load/unload
it.

If there's a COM Add-in, besides, you'll also need to display this dialog box
where you can check/uncheck the COM Add-in. If the COM Add-in is a
machine-level (rather than user-level) Add-in, you'll have no choice but to go
to the Registry to change the loading behavior. See this KB article
