How to save a Global Template?

What exact steps are needed to save a Global Template?

I have read the Checkbox Template Notes document and the one on templates at
the addbalance.com website (both very informative). However, I am still
unclear on the exact steps to achieve this.

I saved it as CheckboxTemplate.dot into my User Templates folder and then
used Templates & Add-ins > Add and it looked like it added it to a global
template (it was listed with a check mark in the box like the Adobe ones
listed). But when I try to add the Check Marks it did not show the option.

Then I tried another approach. Through Tools > Options, I found the
location of the Startup for Word, and copied the CheckboxTemplate.dot to that
folder. Closed Word, opened it up, and when I went to View > Toolbars the
CheckBox Toggle toolbar was not listed.

Help pls. All I want to be able to do is add check-able boxes to my fax
cover page(without creating a whole form)! Working on a stand-alone WP2000
on XP.

TIA!

If you have saved the template to the Word Startup Directory, (Usually
c:\Documents and Settings\[username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup,
then after you start Word, when you select Toolbars from the View menu, you
should see a Checkbox Toggles item on the list. If you check that item. the
Checkbox Toggles toolbar should be displayed .

If it is not, take a look under Tools>Templates and Add-Ins and make sure
that it appears in the list and that it has a checkmark against it.

With respect I don't understand what you are trying to do. Any templates
you save in your User Templates folder (Tools, Options, File Locations)
ought to show up when you click File, New--and depending on your veroisn of
Word you may have to tell Word that the templates are on your computer
(duh!). If you want to add something to your Fax Cover Template or change
something in it, you ought to open that template itself and make the
changes. You don't have to create a new template, although you can
accomplish the same thing by just opening a new document based on that
template, making the changes and then saving it as a template--which, for
Word I guess technically amounts to a new template. Maybe I don't
understand the "Global" part, in which case I apologize. But the only
"global" template I know of is Normal.dot. That is the thing Word often
asks me if I want to modify--usually a sure sign Word did something nasty
behind my back. I am not really sure what these other things--like
Templates & Addins--are for. Hey there is one heck of a lot about Word I
don't understand. Some of it is utterly beyond me. Like macros. Tried to
read 2 books on the subject (one of them was for beginners!!!) and decided
there are certain mysteries some us are just not meant to plumb. But I
certainly have modified my own fax cover templates--many times, in fact--and
this is how I have done it without any problems. And I have made changes to
Normal.dot this way, too.

Any macros/toolbars in a template that is saved into the Word Start-Up
folder (usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup) are available globally for use in all
documents, regardless of the template from which the individual documents
are created.

In this instance, that is what the OP means by Global Template. If you
select Templates and Add-ins from the Tools menu, you will see a section of
the dialog for Global templates and add-ins. Note that the normal.dot
template is not listed in that section of the dialog and it is not correct
to consider it as a "global" template. Rather, it is the default template
that is used for a document when the "New blank document" button on the
toolbar is used to start a new document or when the Blank document template
is selected in the File>New dialog

Normal.dot is actually superglobal. Not only is it the default document
template, but it also provides toolbars, macros, AutoText, keyboard
shortcuts, and the like to all documents, even those based on other
templates except when the specific document template overrides its settings.

Hi Doug,

I guess spending hours on this paid off as I actually understand what you
are talking about! And it confirmed that I was doing the right things...I
was very confused getting there.

After having the weekend to digest it all and reading your reply I wrote a
long reply listing my actions step by step and then I realized what I should
check out. Voila! It worked!

(I always search for others' posts to solve my problems before I post
myself, so I'll detail what troubleshooting I did to help others who might do
the same: After I confirmed from reading DR's reply that I had done the
right things, I thought there must be something wrong with the file I saved
so I opened the .dot file using Explore and checked under View > Toolbars to
see if the Checkbox Toggle option was available. It wasn't so I went to my
original unzipped download and opened it again. The author's name was the
original author's (CKK), however *somehow* when I saved it the first time, it
had changed the author's name to mine. I guess this should have been my
first clue, but I didn't think anything of it (as I was trying to read (get
thru) the document and the reference doc on templates). I then deleted the
CheckboxTemplate.dot file in Word Startup and did it again and when I open a
new document now, it works!).

Thx a mint for your help Doug!! (And to Charles Kyle Kenyon for providing
the solution!)
