How to resolve the Runtime errors that stops Excel from starting u

How to resolve an error starting Excel 2000, as follows?

The error message reads, "Runtime error (Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime
Library) - this application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more
information."

I'm using Windows 98. Would appreciate any tips to try to resolve this.
